He Sets Captives Free
Updated: Apr 10
There is a song on christian radio right now called, "Let the Redeemed" by Josh Baldwin. The pre-chorus in the song says, "There's no sound louder than a captive set free". Those words remind me of a time, years ago, when my oldest daughter, Brie, now 12, was 8 years old....
At my church, my pastor's wife, and my dear friend, Auna Lynn, writes an amazing Christmas program for the kids to perform each year. The Christmas program is not the usual reenactment of the nativity. It has song and dance and tells the nativity story in a whole new way. The kids allow the spirit to work through them, to share the good news of Jesus' birth in a different, creative, & relatable way. All the children in our church get a short line to say. In prior years, my daughter was terrified of lines in the play. Dear, sweet, considerate Auna always let her off the hook. She always encouraged my daughter to speak, but was ever kind when my Brie would get sick at the thought of it. Finally, in 3rd grade, my daughter was able to speak her line. Out loud. In front of the whole congregation, plus many guests.
I'll never forget that day. Her line was, "he sets captives free". Prior to that Sunday performance, Auna mentioned to my daughter that she chose those words for her to say intentionally because God is with her when she's scared or nervous. God had set her free from her nerves and had given her courage. That's exactly what happened. My sweet little daughter, dressed in shepherd's clothes, stood there and proudly declared that our God, our Jesus sets captives free!
Isaiah reminds us, "The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon me, for the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted and to proclaim that captives will be released and prisoners will be freed." (Isaiah 61:1)
My daughter was set free from fear that day. I have watched her grow every day since. Now she shines, she acts in local plays, she performs at band concerts flawlessly, she swims, she plays basketball, & she isn't afraid to speak her mind. I urge you to consider today, what has God freed you from? What holds you captive?
Is it addiction, brokenheartedness, fear, depression? The list goes on and on. It could be easy to get wrapped up in those holds that shackle our hands. Consider today that God sets captives free. You no longer have to live in bondage. Cry out to Jesus, let God set you free, shout his praise! There's no sound louder than a captive set free!
